You start somewhere in nature. Every creature, flower, stone or cloud in it is a window: head toward one and keep going, and its body turns out to hold a whole other place — a fish opens onto a river or a reef, a feather onto the sky, a cactus onto the desert — and so on, with no floor.
A plate's span is never allowed past a fixed number of screens. The moment one of its openings grows larger than that, it is promoted to be the new plate and the scale divides back down. Coordinates stay near 1 forever, so precision never decays — the depth counter is the only thing that grows.
Layers are derived, not stored. Zoom out and back into the same opening and you get the same drawing, every time. Zoom out past where you started and the plate you began on turns out to have been a detail of something larger, all along.
